Nowza

How-to videos

Each video is about a minute long and shows Nowza step by step. Pick your phone, then watch from the start or jump to a topic.

Get started

Sign in, set up your watch, and invite your first friend.

  • Sign in with Apple, choose the name friends see, and tap Turn On Walkie-Talkie so messages can reach your iPhone even when it's locked.
  • Sign in with Google, choose your name and avatar, and allow the microphone and notifications so friends can ring you.
  • Using Do Not Disturb or another Focus? Add Nowza to its allowed apps so your watch still rings.
  • Using Do Not Disturb? Add Nowza to its allowed apps so your phone and watch still ring.
  • Open Nowza on your watch and it signs in by itself. A watch is optional: Nowza works with just a phone.
  • Tap Invite a Friend and send the link. Inviting takes a subscription, and friends you invite talk with you free.

Friends can be on iPhone or Android. An Apple account and a Google account are separate Nowza accounts.

Talk and answer

Ring a friend, listen, and talk back from your phone or your watch.

  • Tap a friend, then hold the mascot's mouth. When you feel a tap, start talking, and let go when you're done.
  • For a longer message, double-tap the mouth to keep talking, then tap again to stop.
  • On a watch, tap the ring to listen, then hold to reply.
  • When your iPhone is locked, tap the notification to listen, and talk back from the Lock Screen.
  • With Play Audio Immediately, messages play as soon as they arrive. Open Nowza to talk back. If your watch has no speaker, connect Bluetooth headphones.

One-on-one, only one of you needs a subscription.

Missed a message?

See what became of your message, and play one you missed.

  • After you talk, a friend's row shows Ringing, Busy, Do Not Disturb, Played, No reply or Can't reach.
  • "· saved" means your message is waiting on their device.
  • A message you miss is kept for a day. Tap the Saved message notification, or Play Saved Message on the friend's Talk screen. A short tone plays first, so you know it isn't live.

The same on iPhone, Apple Watch, Android and Wear OS.

Talk in groups

Talk with several friends at once, like a set of walkie-talkies.

  • Tap New Group, name it and pick friends. A group holds up to 15 people, who join when they accept.
  • One person talks at a time. While someone is talking you'll see their name, and you can talk once they finish.
  • Under Receive Messages, choose Ring, Always On or Muted.
  • Talk in groups from your watch, and make and change them on your phone.

Everyone in a group needs their own subscription. A friend's doesn't cover you, but an iPhone Family plan does.

Make it yours

Choose where you're rung, how messages play, and what friends see.

  • When Friends Ring You: Apple Watch Only, Apple Watch, Then iPhone, or iPhone Only.
  • When Friends Ring You: Watch Only, Watch, Then Phone, or Phone Only. Let Rings Through Do Not Disturb keeps Nowza ringing.
  • When a Friend Starts a New Chat: Notify Before Playing, or Play Audio Immediately. On iPhone, also Notify, Talk in Nowza Only, which keeps chats inside Nowza.
  • Turn off Tell Friends When I'm Busy, and friends see only No reply.
  • Change your name and avatar, block or report someone, and subscribe or manage your subscription.
